Welcome to Routes Jukebox, a video based website dedicated to the blues, country and folk scene in Liverpool. Sorry, that’s a mistake. A big mistake. There is no scene, no scene whatsoever, but there are a lot of great singers and bands in Liverpool and many have recently been wearing their roots crowns proudly on their heads and through venues and club nights like The Company Store, Mellowtone and the Family Folk Up and a whole lot of other individuals who keep themselves to themselves, the not scenes are making a name for themselves and in little pockets across the city you can find all kinds of modern day folk getting back to their roots and on here we’re hoping to introduce you to some of them. About a year or so or even longer ago, I started to think about making a documentary about the not scene and started filming little bits here and there. I shot some stuff at The Company Store and with Mike Badger’s Nashville Liverpool Underground Medicine Show project when they all first met out in Austin, Texas and I also shot some footage with the Random Family, SJ Downes and the fantastic Delta Maid. However, wanting to try and do it all myself so I could get an idea of what it was all about, I took a long time even doing the basics and never got to get anything out there. Slow forward a year or so on and I’m still collecting footage but I’ve met with an editor who goes by the name of Brainface, who’s helped me get some of the first edits out there and I’ve eventually started to edit some myself and this Routes Jukebox will now play host to all of this video work which will include an ongoing series of live musical performance videos alongside a series of short documentaries about some of the singers, with the first people to feature being The Random Family, Delta Maid and Mike Badger whilst in the pipeline are Sixteen Tonnes, Dave Jackson, SJ Downes, and a little bit of old school folk with a short film about Liverpool legends Jacqui & Bridie! And that’s just for starters as there’s also plans for the future to feature some of our Statesider friends visits to this Merseysippi Delta and if I get to go back Stateside then maybe there’ll be a few diversions from that side too. Welome from the Nashville of the North (UK).
Thanks
Mark McNulty
