This is the Smoke Fairies, they’re two English girls, they’re a bit dark and a bit folk and this collaborative video shot with Arek Chrusciel came together in a day of madness at the recent Liverpool Sound City festival. I was mostly shooting stills for the organisers of the festival but had arranged for one band to come in and do an unplugged performance for Routes and then, on the day itself, we got a last minute chance to shoot this with Smoke Fairies. Myself and Arek had only just met for the first time fifteen minutes previously and then the girls walked in, sat down, played one song and we sat there filming with our jaws on the floor ‘cos the sounds that these two can make with just two acoustics and their voices is quite incredible. Outside was industry madness and people running between panels and the like but inside our little messy meeting room, we were taken a millions miles away. And then when they left we were joined by our 2nd band of the day, Said The Whale, and they got us all fired up for going back into the madness with a brilliant performance that should be going live tomorrow!
